Biography

Professional:

Before starting Eberly McMahon Copetas LLC in January 2002, Bob practiced law with a boutique business and litigation firm in Chicago and in the Cincinnati office of a large, national firm. Since 1993 he has worked with a wide range of clients—individuals, closely-held and family businesses, and Fortune 500 companies—all of whom had one thing in common: they needed Bob’s help solving a particular problem. Whether the client is new, ongoing or a referral from another law firm, Bob uses his experience and analytical skills to handle complex factual and legal issues with common sense and keen attention to costs and efficiencies.

An array of clients has benefitted from Bob’s counsel over the 30+ years of his legal career, including:

  • Companies protecting their client lists and other proprietary information when employees departed for competitors in violation of non-compete and non-solicitation agreements, as well as businesses and individuals defending similar claims.
  • Professionals and small businesses throughout Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky (including electrical, plumbing, and cabinet, countertop, and lumber suppliers; architects, physicians, dentists and accountants; and landscapers) enforcing their contract and lien rights for services rendered and unpaid accounts.
  • Individuals and businesses, including a local non-profit organization, whose insurance companies improperly denied coverage under their insurance policies.
  • Local builders, contractors, developers and individuals either prosecuting or defending construction and property damage disputes.
  • Banks and mortgage companies in lawsuits ranging from fraudulent cashier’s checks to claims against a national insurance company for coverage on a depository bond and for the defense of employment discrimination claims.
  • A large, national utility company in various legal and administrative proceedings to enforce the company’s tariffs and easement rights, safeguard its regulatory right to access meters and prevent tampering and fraudulent activity, and the recovery of hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid accounts and property damage claims.
  • Closely held companies and former business partners in claims involving embezzlement, breach of fiduciary duty, defamation and corporate dissolution.
  • Individuals in litigation involving trusts and estates, including three sisters whose interests in two multi-million-dollar trusts were being undermined and misappropriated.
  • And, working closely with the firm’s paralegal Wendy Dorn, enforcing client judgments, and executing against assets (bank and investment accounts, wages, real property, other personal property) to recover monies owed to clients.

These and other clients continue to benefit from Bob’s experience in court, administrative proceedings, and alternative forms of dispute resolution, including arbitration and mediation. Whatever the forum, Bob uses skills developed over 30+ years of practice to accomplish the client’s desired objective and result in a reasonable, effective, and efficient manner.

Personal:

Being the youngest of ten children, Bob benefited from parents and older siblings who provided unconditional love and support, instilled a solid work ethic, and stressed the importance of helping others. Their example prompted Bob to join the Board of Trustees of ProKids, an organization whose vision is “a safe, permanent and nurturing home for every child.” And it is why Bob, his husband Mark and the law firm commit financial resources each year to support the ProKids vision and mission.

Bob and his husband Mark live in Cincinnati with their dogs Bandit and Carlan. In his free time, Bob enjoys spending time with Mark and the dogs, traveling, playing golf, catching a game (Bengals, Reds, UK, ND), hitting Cincinnati’s awesome restaurants and festivals, volunteering at ProKids, and hanging out with any of the 11 siblings and 70 nieces and nephews in their collective families.
